How much water does air conditioning remove from a Dubai home each day?
Our estimate for an empty four-bedroom villa in August is around a hundred litres a day — roughly five water-cooler bottles. The water condenses on the cold coil behind the ceiling grille and drains outside. Switching the system off stops the removal but not the arrival.

Where does the water in a Dubai home's air actually go?
Warm air meeting a surface colder than itself gives up water, which collects on that surface. In an air conditioning system that surface is the evaporator coil behind the ceiling grille. Water runs off the coil into a drain pan and leaves the building through a condensate pipe.
The same process on the outside of a cold glass is the visible version of it. Nothing about the mechanism is specific to air conditioning; the coil is simply the coldest surface in the house while the system runs.
How large is the daily volume?
For an empty four-bedroom villa in a Dubai August, our estimate is around a hundred litres a day, or roughly five water-cooler bottles. Over a six-week absence that is more than two hundred bottles.
This is a calculation from envelope infiltration rates and August humidity ratios rather than a measurement. We intend to measure it directly by collecting condensate from a drain over a known period and will publish the figure when we have it.
What changes when the system is switched off?
Switching the air conditioning off stops the drying. It does not stop the arriving. Water vapour continues entering through every gap and seal in the building envelope, all day, whether or not anyone is home.
What changes is only that nothing is taking it back out — which is the difference between an empty home and an empty home with a problem.

- Liquid water produced when air conditioning cools air below its dew point, collected in a drain pan and piped outside.
- Humidity ratio
- The mass of water vapour carried per unit mass of dry air. Unlike relative humidity it does not change with temperature, which makes it the useful measure when comparing indoor and outdoor air.
