What should you do in the five minutes before locking up a Dubai home for the summer?

Open every internal door, leave wardrobe doors ajar, remove anything damp, water plants sparingly, and run the air conditioning hard for a few hours before setting it to dry mode. None of it requires a purchase. All of it works by letting air reach the surfaces where water collects.

Why does opening internal doors help an empty home?

Air that cannot move cannot dry. A closed room in an unoccupied building stops exchanging air with the rest of the house and develops its own temperature and humidity, usually cooler and damper than the spaces that still see some circulation.

Opening internal doors costs nothing and allows whatever air movement the system produces to reach rooms that would otherwise be isolated for the length of the absence.

Why do wardrobes matter more than other furniture?

A wardrobe against an external wall combines the two conditions that produce condensation: a surface colder than the air around it, and air that is not moving. Once cooling stops, that back panel is one of the coldest surfaces in the home, and the enclosed volume in front of it is among the stillest.

Leaving the doors ajar does not add anything to the room. It allows air to reach a cold surface that would otherwise sit in a sealed pocket.

Does watering the plants make a difference to humidity?

No, and it is worth being precise about why. A watering can twice a week adds roughly half a litre of water a day to a home where envelope infiltration is delivering something on the order of a hundred litres a day. The contribution is negligible.

The reason to water sparingly is different: a pot that stays saturated for several weeks in a warm, still room is a damp substrate sitting against a wall, and that is a local condition rather than a whole-building one.
