Why does a Dubai home smell when you come back from the summer, and what removes it?
The smell is the air conditioning system, not the house, and switching it on releases rather than clears it. In one monitored villa the odour index reached about twenty-six times its lived-in baseline on the day the family returned, then fell back to baseline within two days. Starting the system two days before arrival moves that release before anyone is in the building.

What produces the smell in a closed Dubai home?
An air conditioning system left off for several weeks holds standing water in its drainage tray, keeps a damp coil, and receives no airflow. Warm, dark and undisturbed is an ordinary description of an unused system rather than an unusual one.
When the system restarts, the fan moves air across those surfaces and whatever has accumulated enters the air in the occupied space. This is why the smell arrives after the system is switched on rather than at the moment the front door opens.
Why doesn't the smell simply clear on its own?
Most Dubai homes have no fresh-air intake. The air conditioning does not bring outside air in and does not push inside air out; it recirculates the same air through the same coil. There is no exhaust path, so the volatile compounds responsible for the odour have nowhere to go.
They do disperse eventually. In the villa we monitor, the index was back at its lived-in baseline about two days after the family returned. The home was occupied throughout that period, so we cannot attribute the clearance to the system alone.
What should you do before returning to a Dubai home?
Have the air conditioning restarted about two days before arrival. The release happens either way; starting early means it happens before anyone is breathing it, and the two days are enough for the level to fall back.
Run the bathroom and kitchen extract fans during those two days. In a home with no fresh-air intake they are the only devices that move air out of the building, drawing replacement air in through the envelope as they do.
Do not open the windows to air the house out on arrival. In a Dubai August the outdoor air carries more moisture than the indoor air at every hour, so ventilating adds to the load rather than clearing it.
What if it still smells after two days?
Then the problem is not one that drying will solve. A system that has been dried and run for two days and still produces an odour has established growth in it, and at that point cleaning the air is treating a symptom.

How the figures on this page were produced
This page reports one absence of four recorded on the same sensor between 2023 and 2026. In the two where the system was switched off, odour rose about fifteen-fold and about twelve-fold. In this one, with the system running at 24 °C, it rose about sevenfold and peaked at roughly twenty-six times baseline on the day of return. In a fourth, a different home with a clean system and the system left running, twenty-seven days empty produced no rise. Read the page as one case in that set rather than as the whole picture.
