What is the rule for leaving a Dubai home empty, and does it change in winter?
The rule is not never switch it off — it is not during the summer. Two weeks with the system off is defensible in December, when there is far less moisture outside to leak in, and is not defensible in August. And where a home still smells after the system has been dried and run, the problem has moved past what treating a system can reach.

Does the advice change if you travel in winter?
The answer changes over a Dubai winter, and it changes enough to deserve its own treatment rather than a footnote here. We publish that separately, closer to the winter break.
What happens when treating the system is not enough?
One family we work with had a difficult first summer. We visited twice the following year, in February and May 2024, replaced liner, treated the system and fitted blocks. The odour index more than halved. The next summer reversed most of that improvement, because what remained had gone past what treating a system can reach.
They moved home in January 2025. We inspected the new property before they took it and have treated it on the same quarterly rhythm since, and the same sensor has stayed quiet through two summers. We are not claiming the move alone produced that outcome — too much changed at once. What the record shows is that treating a system has a ceiling, and that a home which still smells after drying is telling you where the problem actually sits.

How the figures on this page were produced
The two summers compared here both had the air conditioning left running on our instruction, so what differs between them is the property, not the setting. The two earlier absences, in December 2023 and March 2024, had the system switched off and produced larger rises — about fifteen-fold and about twelve-fold.
