What should you do with the air conditioning when you leave a Dubai home for the summer?
Leave the system running in dry mode. Switching it off, setting it to 30°C or running the fan alone are all common in Dubai and none of them protects an empty home, because an air conditioner removes moisture as well as heat and only one of those settings keeps it doing so.

Why does the setting matter in an empty home?
An air conditioner in a Dubai home does two jobs, and only one of them is obvious. It lowers air temperature, and it removes water vapour from the air by condensing it on a cold coil and draining it outside the building.
Water vapour keeps entering an empty home regardless of occupancy, because infiltration through gaps, seals and door frames is driven by pressure and vapour-pressure differences rather than by anyone being present. A setting that stops the system running therefore stops moisture removal while moisture arrival continues.
How long does an empty Dubai home take to change?
Less time than most people assume. In one villa we monitor, the odour index reached its full elevated level roughly five hours after the family left, and then held at that level for the remaining eleven days of the absence rather than continuing to climb.
The practical consequence is that duration is not the risk factor people treat it as. A two-week trip loads a room about as fully as a six-week one.
